How to get the good feeling

As promised in the last blog, we’re going to tell you about what steps we made to get answesr on questions we have about a Compromis 39.

We were triggered by a message on Facebook about a Compromis 39 which is for sale. Unfortunately, this boat is at the Azores and we are not able to visit it soon.

So, how do we know if a Compromis 39 is a good boat for us? Well, one of the nice parts of having a boat, is that you know there are people who are willing to tell you about their boat, like we would do if someone asks us. So what if we are going to find someone in The Netherlands and just ask if we can talk about their boat en maybe if we can visit it.

That looks like a good plan, but…. Where to start? Fortunately there is a Compromis Club. It’s a Compromis Owners Club. So I emailed them with the question if they can help us find a Compromis 39 owner in The Netherlands. We got an answer where it looks like they can’t/won’t help us with that. The solution could be to join the owners club…. OK, but we are not an owner. It looks like, that’s not a problem. And as a member, we have access to the members list where we can find owners of all kinds of Compromis, also 39’s.

So we’re now a member of the Compromis Owner club without a Compromis! We have some credentials to login the website and we have access to the members list. I open it, see a long list of Compromis and C-yachts(new name for Compromis) but…. 3 members with a 39. Hm, that not much!

2 members looks like, were living in the south/west of The Netherlands, 1 in the north. A mailed to the one in the north because on our holiday we were with Casper in the north of The Netherlands.

We got a very nice email back and they were willing to have us on their boat. Their Compromis 39 is year newer then the one we saw, but there are not big differences.

We visited the member in Makkum. It seems like they live in Makkum and have also their boat in Makkum. So it was not difficult to plan a visit. Carla and I went to the marina in Makkum and we saw for the first time a Compromis 39 with mast, nicely floating in the water. What a beauty. The owners were very nice and we walked through the complete boat. Every cabin, every locker, every hatch was open for us. We could asked everything and man, what a difference was this regarding the Compromis that we saw in Zeeland this spring.

The nice thing is that when you talk with a happy owner, it’s a real honest talk. A lot of pros but also cons were mentioned. We saw how they use the boat and when we drove back to Casper, we had the feeling that a Compromis is a very good boat for our situation. The owners in Makkum lived on the boat with a big dog and when their daughter stayed, she also takes her dog with her. In other words, if they can be on a Compromis 39 with 3 adults and 2 dogs… we can with 2 adults and 2 teenagers.
