Almost halfway to Azores – Den Oever

What is the weather unpredictable and unstable … The men at Linde had imagined the delivery something else, sunshine, 25 degrees, half wind, 6 knots….

Unfortunately, things were a bit different. It is not a hellish trip, but yes … in the summer with gloves and scarf is not what you hope.

Here is the status up to now.

At departure on June 3 (1707 NM to go) there was almost no wind. That means that the engine was on for 20 hours. The annoying thing about no wind and an engine is that when there are waves, the boat moves a lot. The sails cannot provide stability. There has been a storm on the Atlantic Ocean and the swell was near the Azores. Linde has had a nice wake-up call.

On day 2 (1598 NM to go), on the other hand, there was a strong wind. The speed increased nicely, but it was quite the other extreme.

Day 3 (1430 NM to go) was calmer weather. A low pressure area seems to be approaching and the decision is made to turn a little more to the east to avoid too strong winds. The expectation is that once the depression is in the eastern part of the ocean, it will deflect upward.

Day 4 (1287 NM to go) rain, rain and more rain. Halfway through the day the wind picks up and the sailing improves.

Day 5 (1173 NM to go) again a lot of rain. In addition, it is cold, so we put on scarves and gloves. Because of the swell there is also seasickness, which doesn’t make it any more fun.

Day 6 (1013 NM to go) Today there is sunshine and almost half way!!! Ok, there is no wind again, so the engine is on again. After today we still have 890 NM to cover before we can touch the mainland of Den Oever.
