YES, it is true indeed. We have bought a sailboat, but do not yet own her. How should we proceed?
Linde is in the water in the Azores and will be lifted this winter. MAY will then do a full inspection and describe what needs to be done. We have agreed with the sellers that they will mostly take care of things there and we will pay for repairs to get safely to the Netherlands. These repairs will also benefit us. The seal of the Saildrive for example. When that is replaced, we can go on for a few years. The same goes for the reinforcement/repair of the sails. For now we can do nothing but wait until Linde is out of the water.
So what can we do? Well Casper has to be sold. We have found a broker (De Valk) who expects that Casper will be sold quickly in these times. They indicate what we can use as an asking price and make sure Casper is for sale on the well-known websites. We think the price is a bit on the high side, but hey, we know about sailing, not about trade. This means that we have to empty Casper. Everything has to be taken out.
Carla and I are going to be busy for 2 days. From start to finish we go through the boat and pack everything in moving boxes. Actually this goes quite well, but every now and then it is quite emotional. We have experienced a lot together in the period that we had Casper. Life looks really different now than when we bought Casper. We have lost loved ones. Beautiful memories have been added and our view of the world and especially of ourselves has changed.
Finally we go with 2 very full cars to Den Oever. In the parental home of Carla we can store everything in the attic until Linde arrives. We decide to take things home that we may need for sailing, because you never know if we will rent a sailboat again.
The next day, we sail Casper from Heeg to Sneek. Just the two of us, just like the first time we picked up Casper. How strange to do this, but how familiar it is. Just the two of us and Casper. It’s windy, it rains sometimes but still we enjoy this trip. We lay Casper exemplary in the sales harbor, even if I say so myself. We wonder how long it will take before we are so agile with Linde.
After walking through the boat one last time and putting the last things in the car, the time has come. We leave the key behind and consider for now that Casper is no longer ours. We get the feeling that we therefore no longer have a boat, strange.
